The Internet Map, this is how you know a fabulous web page where this unique map is that reminds us more of the space full of planets and suns than a map of the Internet, although in reality the design is based on physics as we can appreciate later. If you access “The Internet Map” at https://internet-map.net you will be able to see the map we showed in the video below, and interact with it. In his welcome message this unique web does not explain the incredible complexity of the elaboration of this map, in the following text that is a translation of the original.

The internet map

Like any other map, the Internet map is a diagram that shows the relative position of the objects; but unlike real maps (for example, the map of the Earth) or virtual maps (for example, the map of Mordor), the objects shown in it are not aligned on a surface. Mathematically speaking, the Internet map is a two-dimensional presentation of links between websites on the Internet. Each site is a circle on the map, and its size is determined by website traffic, the larger the amount of traffic, the larger the circle. Users switch between websites and links, and the stronger the link, the closer websites are to organize each other.

Loads and springs

To draw an analogy from classical physics, one can say that websites are electrically charged bodies, while the links between them are springs. The springs put together similar websites, and the load does not allow the bodies to adhere and pushes the websites if there is no link between them. Originally, all these electrified bodies (web sites) are scattered randomly on the surface of the map. The springs are stretched, the repulsion energy is high, the system is far from being in balance. Then, the websites begin to move under the influence of the forces exerted and, in a moment, they stop: the forces of attraction are now equal to the forces of repulsion, the system has reached its equilibrium. It is exactly that state that is shown on the Internet map.

In addition, an analogy of quantum physics can be drawn. In this case, a website is a physical body with a finite mass, a single user is the quantum, of mass, the highly disseminated Higgs boson, which has not yet been found (NB: was found in 2012), while The act of changing users between sites is the gravitational quantum: the graviton, another hypothetical particle.

Anyway, the actual mapping algorithm The Internet map is quite far from the analogies given above. For those interested, the closest description of the mathematical model can be found in the research [1], and the engineering solution is very similar to what has been described in [2]. The Google Maps engine has been used as a platform to display.

Semantic Web

The Internet map is a picture of the global network at the end of 2011. It covers more than 350 thousand websites from 196 countries and all domain areas. The information on more than 2 million links between the websites has joined some of them in thematic groups. As you might have expected, the largest groups are made up of national websites, that is, sites that belong to a country. For convenience, all websites related to a specific country have the same color. For example, the red area on the top corresponds to the Russian segment of the network, the yellow on the left represents the Chinese segment, the purple on the right is Japanese, the celestial blue is the US segment, etc.

It is important to note that the groups on the map have a semantic load, that is, they join the websites according to their content. For example, you can see a vast group of pornography between Brazil and Japan, as well as a large number of minor groups that link websites from the same field or for similar purposes.

The Internet phenomenon

The global Internet network is a phenomenon of technological civilization, and its exceptional complexity exceeds everything that humanity has created. In essence, what we are dealing with here is a large amount of completely unstructured information. The Internet map is an attempt to look at the hidden structure of the network, understand its colossal scale and examine what is impossible to understand from the basic figures of statistics.
