According to numbers from the study called, Profile of the Foreign Tourist 2018, prepared by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (Promperú), in 2018 the country received a total of 4 million 198,051 foreign tourists, of which 65 % did it for vacations, and a total of 629,708 tourists came for business, which represented a 27% growth compared to 2017.
The origin of these without including Peruvians living abroad, gave South America with 60%, 18% arrived from North America, and 14% came from Europe. Chile 27%, United States 14% and Ecuador 7%, were the main tourist markets for Peru.
The study showed the departments that tourists visited the most, and these were: Lima 73%, followed by Cusco 37%, Tacna 28%, Puno 17% and Arequipa 17%. On average, visitors toured two regions during their stay in the country.
In turn, the numbers reported that the average residence time was ten nights, while the cost amounted to $ 932 per person, this does not include airfare round trip to the country of origin, however the expense is surprising made by Australian tourists, they almost quadrupled this figure and reached $ 3,573.
In terms of accommodation, 32% chose three-star accommodations, while 28% used hotels or hostels with one to two stars. On the other hand, 47% of Asian tourists and 35% of North Americans chose four or five star hotels, the PromPerú study says.
