Earthquake in the Piura region of Peru

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake was reported at 12:10 p.m. in the city of Sullana in the Piura region today, Friday, July 30, according to information from the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) through Twitter. For its part, the international press also reported on the earthquake that has caused material losses, as well as injuries in the area.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru on Friday, according to reports from the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The seismic focus was located 33.2 kilometers deep and the epicenter was located 8 kilometers east of Sullana.

The Geophysical Institute of Ecuador reported that the movement was also felt in that neighboring country.

The National Emergency Operations Center of Peru (COEN) reported that after the earthquake there have been damages to homes, commercial premises, communication routes and basic services.

In addition, they reported that several injured people have been reported.

For its part, the Piura Health Directorate reported that at least 35 people have been treated as a result of this natural phenomenon.

Before the event, President Pedro Castillo was present in the area.

According to the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), the earthquake was perceived strong in the provinces of Piura, Ayabaca, Huancabamba, Morropón-Chulucanas, Paita, Sechura, Sullana and Talara, and moderate in Tumbes, Rear Admiral Villar (Zorritos) and mild in Zarumilla.
